Trillium Lakelands District School Board failed to inform staff about asbestos-containing ceiling tiles in some classrooms at Monck Public School in Bracebridge. Over a period of years, some teachers attached learning materials to these tiles, hung objects from tile frames, and moved tiles during special events. Other workers handled, removed or cut asbestos-containing ceiling tiles without the required protections in place when installing electrical equipment and removing tiles. Teachers have described dust and debris being released into the air and settling onto classroom surfaces as a result. In May, the Trillium Lakelands Teacher Local asked the Ministry of Labour to investigate the school board’s asbestos management program. In late June, the school board announced plans to remove a significant amount of asbestos containing materials such as ceiling tiles and pipe fittings from a number of its schools. The Ministry of Labour has extended its investigation into July.
