ETFO Calls to Action / Media Releases
Promises Unfulfilled: Addressing the Special Education Crisis in Ontario
March 18, 2025
For decades, ETFO has advocated for Ontario’s public education system to mandate and fully fund the supports and programs necessary to ensure a high-quality education that recognizes the diverse needs and abilities of all children, including those with disabilities.
ETFO’s new position paper, Promises Unfulfilled: Addressing the Special Education Crisis in Ontario, serves as a renewed call to action to finally address the shortcomings of a system that is failing children with disabilities in Ontario.
Joint Statement on Publicly Funded Education in Ontario
February 19, 2025
Investment is the Foundation of a Thriving Society and Resilient Economy
A high quality publicly funded education system should be the priority of any government. It has a direct correlation to how to succeed as a society, province and country, and how we compete in an increasingly global economic environment. Publicly funded education is fundamental to the maintenance and support of a democratic society that informs and engages all students in becoming active and well-informed citizens of Ontario and of Canada.
The following is a statement from Karen Brown, President of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), on the Ontario Autism Coalition’s Special Education Survey Report:
“The Ontario Autism Coalition’s latest report underscores the devastating impact of unmet student needs, policy failures, and chronic underfunding by the Ford Conservatives on children with special education needs across the province.
October 30, 2024
Today’s fall economic statement provides no meaningful new investments to support public education. The Ford government has missed yet another opportunity to undo the damage caused by its ongoing cuts to public education. Premier Ford continues to sacrifice the success and well-being of Ontario’s students and educators in order to benefit well-connected insiders.
May 22, 2024
The following is a statement from the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) calling on public school board trustees across Ontario to reject cuts to student services and programs that are a direct result of the Ford government’s chronic underfunding of public education:
“Faced with increased costs due to inflation and inadequate provincial funding, school boards across Ontario are again being asked to do more with less.

Ford government fails Ontario’s students once again by refusing to allocate new education funding
March 26, 2024
The Ford government has failed Ontario’s students once again by shamefully refusing to allocate new funding to adequately support a high-quality public education system. The following is a statement from the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO):
March 19, 2024
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) issued the following statement today in support of the decision by the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF) not to extend the re-employment limit for retired teachers and administrators from 50 to 95 days. Students, families, and educators need a real solution to the teacher recruitment and retention crisis, not more band-aids and half-measures:
Ford government to blame for teacher recruitment and retention crisis in Ontario
February 22, 2024
Minister of Education Stephen Lecce and the Ford government have finally admitted that they have a teacher recruitment and retention problem. In an article published in the Toronto Star on February 21, the minister said to reporters that the province is looking at “every option available” to help ease the shortage of teachers in school boards across Ontario. The government faces the same challenges with recruiting and retaining education workers who provide services and supports to students as well.

The term of the four-year central agreement is from September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2026. OPSBA ratification is required for the agreement to take effect; their vote is scheduled for next week.

February 27, 2023
In new data released today by People for Education, principals report that students and school staff are under “severe stress,” and that mental health and well-being are their top priorities. ETFO renews calls for safety measures that ensure safe, sustainable return to in-person learning
January 3, 2022
Over the winter break and following last week’s announcement, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) advocated for a short delay to the restart of in-person learning so that additional protections could be in place before students and education workers return. Given the rapid spread of Omicron across Ontario, today’s announcement is a safer decision than the one made last week, but additional action is still needed.
December 31, 2021
On December 16, to protect our schools, communities, and families, we wrote you requesting the implementation of a number of measures to stem the surge of the highly infectious Omicron variant. We acknowledged that the measures suggested would require considerable political will, but urged their consideration so that in-person learning, and the considerable benefits it brings to students, could continue in January.
A message from ETFO President Karen Brown
December 30, 2021
Again, Ontarians were left waiting until the last minute to hear from the Ford government on what additional measures would be implemented to ensure students and education workers could return safely to in-person learning. And again, after hearing their inadequate plan, we are left feeling deflated, disappointed and genuinely concerned for the safety of our members, students and their families.

TORONTO, ON—Today, the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO), Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) issued the following statement in response to the Ford government’s release of its back-to-school plan
August 3, 2021
Today, the Ford government delivered an incomplete and inadequate school reopening plan that loosens safety precautions that will likely lead to more COVID-19 outbreaks and disruption to in-person learning. While we all want a return to in-person learning that is safe and sustainable, the only way this can happen is if we have the safety precautions in place that further prevent the spread of COVID-19. The province’s plan does not do enough, especially given the increased risks the Delta variant poses to those who are unvaccinated, including children under 12.
