ETFO member survey shows violence pervasive in schools

An alarming number (77 per cent) of members of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) say they have personally experienced violence or witnessed violence against another staff member, according to a survey conducted for the Federation in February and March 2023.

The province’s plan does not do enough, especially given the increased risks the Delta variant poses to those who are unvaccinated, including children under 12.

“In Summer 2020, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) retained medical and scientific experts as part of a legal proceeding; Dr. David Fisman was one of those experts. He was compensated for his involvement, which was public. The provincial government was certainly aware of the experts with whom we were working.
 
Today’s Toronto Star article clearly exposes the repeated failures of the Ford government to keep Ontario’s students, educators and education workers safe.
 
In this letter to Minister Stephen Lecce, ETFO president Sam Hammond writes that modifications are required to PPM 164 to respect teacher professional judgment and to ensure families stay engaged in public education until all students can return to in-person learning.
 
Despite the increased risk of transmission highlighted by the government’s own health experts, the government has yet to implement additional protections for students, educators and other staff currently working in schools.
 
AEFO, ETFO, OECTA, and OSSTF/FEESO call on the government to convene an advisory table of all education stakeholders immediately to develop a clear action plan for Ontario’s return to schools.

Today, the Ford government delivered an incomplete and inadequate school reopening plan that loosens safety precautions that will likely lead to more COVID-19 outbreaks and disruption to in-person learning. While we all want a return to in-person learning that is safe and sustainable, the only way this can happen is if we have the safety precautions in place that further prevent the spread of COVID-19. The province’s plan does not do enough, especially given the increased risks the Delta variant poses to those who are unvaccinated, including children under 12.

“In Summer 2020, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) retained medical and scientific experts as part of a legal proceeding; Dr. David Fisman was one of those experts. He was compensated for his involvement, which was public. The provincial government was certainly aware of the experts with whom we were working.
 
Today’s Toronto Star article clearly exposes the repeated failures of the Ford government to keep Ontario’s students, educators and education workers safe.
 
In this letter to Minister Stephen Lecce, ETFO president Sam Hammond writes that modifications are required to PPM 164 to respect teacher professional judgment and to ensure families stay engaged in public education until all students can return to in-person learning.
 
Despite the increased risk of transmission highlighted by the government’s own health experts, the government has yet to implement additional protections for students, educators and other staff currently working in schools.
 
AEFO, ETFO, OECTA, and OSSTF/FEESO call on the government to convene an advisory table of all education stakeholders immediately to develop a clear action plan for Ontario’s return to schools.
